BIOGRAPHY IN ENGLISH:

SAMO ŠALAMON – guitarist and composer

SAMO ŠALAMON is one of the most talented young guitarists and composers to emerge on today's jazz scene. He began his musical journey by studying classical guitar in Maribor and continued briefly with studying jazz guitar on the jazz conservatorium in Klagenfurt. In December 2000 he was living with and studying individually for one month in New York with the jazz master John Scofield, with whom he has been a friend for years. Through the years he was studying guitar and had lessons with known guitar players such as Rudy Linka, Tim Brady and Andrea Allione in Trieste. So far he has recorded and played with many great international and slovenian jazz musicians (John Scofield, Paul McCandless, Mark Turner, Michel Godard, Drew Gress, Tony Malaby, Mark Helias, Tom Rainey, Dave Binney, Josh Roseman, Gerald Cleaver, Julian Arguelles, Carlo DeRosa, Tyshawn Sorey, Matt Brewer, Kariem Riggins, Luciano Biondini, Jim Mullen, Rudi Mahall, Fareed Haque, Don Falzone, Rudy Linka, Tim Brady, Paolino Dalla Porta, Ares Tavolazzi, Roberto Dani, Joris Teepe, Bruno Cesselli, Zlatko Kaucic, Salvatore Maiore, Kyle Gregory, Emanuele Cisi, Gianluca Petrella, Achille Succi, Steve Altenberg, Yayoi Ikawa, Kruno Levacic, Igor Lumpert, Dusan Novakov, Andrea Allione, Axel Dörner, Uli Jennesen, Loris Bertot, Jan Rhoder, Danilo Gallo, Dejan Pecenko, Alex Deutsch, Luigi Mosso, Francesco Bigoni, Giorgio Pacorig, Igor Bezget, Andjelko Stupar, Milan Nikolic, Manfred Josel, Nino Mureškic, Gasper Bertoncelj, Jure Pukl, Aljosa Jeric, Vasko Atanasovski, Robert Jukic…).

He is a part of many groups and projects, from year 2000 until 2004 he also as a leader of the jazz etno group Ansasa Trio (http://www.geocities.com/ansasatrio/), with whom he has published a CD in 2002 under the name Ansasa Trio: Arabian Picnic. In 2002 he has also recorded his first solo trio album Samo Salamon Trio: A Dream Come True, which featured slovenian jazz musicians.

In 2003 he released the highly aclaimed album Ornethology, which was featured at the jazz festivals Ljubljana, Skopje and Rome and got fantastic reviews from Europe and from the USA, being also album of the week on All About Jazz and among Top Ten Selections in Jazz Times magazine. In April 2004 he had a tour with a fantastic new sextet featuring Dave Binney, Paolino Dalla Porta, Kyle Gregory, Achille Succi and Zlatko Kaucic, the band got again brilliant reviews. From the tour a CD was released in April 2005 on the Italian label Splasc(h) Records. The record again received great reviews and got the honor of being album of the week on All About Jazz.

In the end of 2004 Samo went again to New York and recorded there two new projects as a leader with some of the best jazz musicians in the world: one with Tony Malaby, Mark Helias and Tom Rainey, one with Dave Binney, Josh Roseman, Mark Helias and Gerald Cleaver. The first project was released on Fresh Sound Records in early 2006 as Samo Salamon Quartet: Two Hours, while the second one will be released in fall 2006 again on Fresh Sound Records.

CRITICS:

»I have known Samo Salamon for four years and have enjoyed watching him develop as a player. It is my opinion that he is a talented, highly motivated and hard working musician and composer.«
(JOHN SCOFIELD, December 2000)

»Šalamon is major league material.«
(ALLABOUTJAZZ, November 2003)

"With Ela's Dream, young Slovenian guitarist Samo Salamon has made an album that is not only top shelf, it may be important as well. With its variety, movement, and sheer joyous energy, this program presents jazz as a music of almost infinite possibilies."
(ALLABOUTJAZZ, April 2005)

"He adds an almost dizzying energy, and he swings hard. The net effect is what Ornette Coleman might sound like if his primary instrument were guitar instead of alto saxophone."
(ALLABOUTJAZZ, April 2005)

"Further, his compositions, with their changing tempos, time signatures, and multiple themes, give the album a nearly epic sweep."
(ALLABOUTJAZZ, April 2005)

"...a Salamon and Kaucic duet that, with its power and intensity, recalls Trane and Elvin Jones reaching for the stars. Only it's not; it's something new that could only have come from these musicians, in this time."
(ALLABOUTJAZZ, April 2005)

»Album of the week!«
(ALL ABOUT JAZZ, November 2003)

»Very open music conceptually – great use of textures and sounds.«
(CHRIS POTTER, November 2003)

"Great playing and writing!"
(DAVE DOUGLAS, August 2003)

»These are superb musicians who play superbly together.«
(CADENCE, June 2001)

»A musical gift of great beauty.«
(ALL ABOUT JAZZ, September 2003)

»Think early 90s Blue Note Scofield, with less grease and blues and a more European aesthetic. As a writer, while the influences are also evident, he has managed to assimilate them with his own life experiences into something that is more distinctive and abstruse.«
(JAZZREVIEW, October 2003)

"Ornethology is strong evidence that Samo Salamon is a young musician to watch; with a maturity and vision greater than his years, there is little doubt that he is developing into an artist of consequence."
(JAZZREVIEW, October 2003)

»He is a composer and guitarist beyond his years, and a force to be reckoned with!«
(GOLDMINE MAGAZINE, Joe Milliken, December 2003)

»Ornethology is an album with active, forcing, creative and also aggresive music – however not letting beside the slower and relaxed moments. Ornethology takes the listener in the deeps of full of tension compositions and a strong group sound. It stands for all of the musicians that they have strong presence, concentration and self-confidence in playing and experiment.«
(JAZZDIMENSIONS, September 2003)

»There are no weak moments here!!«
(JAZZLIVE, September 2003)

"Ornette’s Slovenian Hands!"
(ALLABOUTJAZZ, November 2003)

(ALLABOUTJAZZ, November 2003)

»Considering his age and experience, both his writing and playing show a surprising degree of maturity; one wonders where he’ll be five years from now.«
(EJAZZNEWS, September 2003)

»Šalamon is coming through on his own, using singular single note, chords, and ideas rendering various jazz undercurrents with resolve, depth and inventiveness. Never indulgent, disciplined and eager, Šalamon is major league material.«
(ALLABOUTJAZZ, November 2003)

»Leader of the new jazz generation.«
(SLOVENIA TIMES, November 2003)

»Jazz critics, however, ought to add this one to their “To Do” lists!«
(ALLABOUTJAZZ, October 2003)

»He writes tunes that are recognizable already at first listening. Equally important is that he has a totally recoginzable sound on his guitar, which is unlike anything we are used at the jazz guitar. We get a record that simply convinces!«
(POLET, September 2003)

»Additional quality was brought to the group by the excellent guitar virtuoso Samo Salamon, who richened the music with his typical sound!«
(DNEVNIK, December 2003)

»The Ornethology Quartet is not only a proof that Salamon is one of the most creative slovenian musicians, but that the Ornethology Quartet is one of the rarest groups in Slovenia, which is opening doors to international jazz.«
(HIDDEN NOTES, May 2003)

»Rich musicianship, witty music, a bit of John Scofield, who is Samo's role model and mentor, and music worthy of the name Ornette Coleman, is one of the nicest jazz production pearls around.«
(FINANCE, October 2003)

»He has many creative ideas in imagination, so that we can expect a lot more from him.«
(DNEVNIK, June 2003)

»Group improvisation in excellence.«
(FINANCE, July 2003)

»If we are at jazz and jazz guitar, we can already after the first project of Samo Salamon almost definitely say that he is going to grow big.«
(VECER, June 2003)

»His guitar playing can be really fast and accurate, but he can also play really dreamy and softly.«
(MUSKA, May 2003)

»He thinks eclectic and plays music without any burdains, he gives the music his individual character and works more and more internationally and in an integrative and connective way.«
(MUSKA, August 2003)

»Very, very likeable!!!!«
(DNEVNIK, September 2002)

»A welcome addition to all fans of jazz music!«
(DNEVNIK, May 2002)

»Jazz for the third Millenium.«
